We celebrate all Honduran holidays at the school, with events specific to the importance of each day. You will learn about Honduran and Latin American culture through these days as we have fun together!
We also celebrate birthdays of all of our students, major US holidays, and any life events that are happening. This is why you come as friends, but leave as family!
We have an optional Tuesday night dinner and Bible study together at the school. This is where the students can get to know each other better and grow in community.
Every Friday, we hold a short worship and devotional time in Spanish. The purpose is to teach you songs and the Bible in Spanish, and to grow! This is a suggested event, but it is not mandatory.
Students will typical go out an hour a week for different field trips, most often according to their interests and/or missions. All of our trips are designed to facilitate community, give new experiences, teach about the culture, or practice Spanish outside of the school.
Every quarter, we hold a cultural panel or a missionary panel to help you grow in your understanding of life on the mission field. These are held in English to ensure you are able to soak in every piece of advice.
We are able to help you find a home here in Siguatepeque. Our housing options include 2-bedroom apartments, single family homes, or immersion housing with a Honduran family. Prices range from $400-$700 a month, with all utilities including internet.
The Palmerola Airport in Comayagua (XPL) is only 40 minutes from Sigua. The San Pedro Sula Airport (SPS) is 2 hours away. For a fee of $50-$100, our staff can arrange to pick you up at either airport.
Siguatepeque is a central city, so you can travel to many different sites. San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, big cities with great shopping options, are two hours away. Lake Yojoa is only a 30-75 minute drive, with many fun attractions.
Siguatepeque is a big town or a small city, depending on how you look at it, and it is very safe. With normal precautions and common safety measures, it is very unlikely that you will encounter any dangerous activity.
There are three large grocery stores in town, and corner stores ("pulperias") in every neighborhood. Though it may take hunting through second-hand stores, you can find most of what you need without leaving town.
Siguatepeque attracts Hondurans from the whole country because of its pleasant climate. Most of the year, it stays in the 70s to 80s (F), with cool nights (50-60 F). The hottest months are March to May, which is the dry season and gets up to 90 F.
Unfortunately, Honduras's reputation makes people feel like it doesn't have anything to offer. Yet, the country is filled with beautiful landscapes and breathtaking sites!
The country being about the size of Tennessee means that it is possible to see mountains, beaches, cities, and more within 5 hours of Siguatepeque.
